Pershore a great success!

Pershore Farmers’ Market has been heralded a great success for visitors and traders alike.

Held recently on the Bank Holiday Monday, May 27, the market event was moved from Broadstreet to Abbey Field within the central carnival area.

As well as the farmers’ market visitors enjoyed plenty more besides, including children’s rides, birds of prey and a music stage.

The Pudding Shop – a great quality trader

A passion for puddings has boomed into a home-spun enterprise for a family who for more than a decade have been serving up treats in Solihull.

Dorothy, Don and daughter Justine Bridges run The Pudding Shop, a familiar face at the Solihull Farmers Market and now also the Fine Foods market run by Sketts Quality Events.

In 12 years they have not missed a farmers market which takes place in Solihull every first Friday of the month in High Street. They are also now attending the award-nominated fine and local foods market on the third Saturday of the month in Mell Square. They can also be found on the second Saturday of the month at Harborne market.

The Pudding Shop all began more than a decade ago when Don and Dorothy decided to retire to Upton on Severn where they started to bake steamed puddings in their own kitchen.

They started off on the Markets where the business continued to grow. They then moved into a production kitchen & Justine (their daughter) left her job at the time to work full time helping out with The Pudding Shop.

Located in the lovely town of Upton Upon Severn in Worcestershire the family make a huge selection of handmade traditional steamed puddings and now sell to pubs, restaurants and still enjoy returning to their regular markets.

Dorothy said: “We love our markets, over the years our customers have become our friends. We’ve been attending Solihull farmers Market for 12 year and never missed an event and started Solihull fine Foods as soon as this was available.”

Sketts market manager Russell Dean added: “The pudding shop have worked with us for over a decade now and is a great quality trader who is welcome at all our events and a joy to work with.”

Created from a recipe that was developed more than 50 years by Don’s grandmother, the family-run business delights in sharing the different puddings.

In the last 10 years The Pudding Shop has achieved the following:

• Sold over 350,000 Steam Puddings

• Attended over 1000 events

• Supplied Christmas Puddings for over 190,000 Christmas Lunches

• Sold Christmas Puddings in 21 different countries

Afia’s Samosa Shop

Success for Afia’s Samosa Shop at the

FreeFrom Awards 2013

Afia’s Samosa Shop is delighted to announce that our Wheat & Gluten Free Spicy Beef Samosa has been commended in the Ready Meals Category at the prestigious FreeFrom Food Awards 2013 on 16th April. Wheat & Gluten Free Spicy Beef Samosa was one of over 340 products that were entered for the FreeFrom Food Awards, a record 37% increase on last year!

A team of 50 expert judges tested freefrom products across 15 categories including Plant ‘Milk’, Spread, Cheese & Desserts; FreeFrom Breakfast Cereals; Grocery; Ready Meals; and Savoury Biscuits and Snacks.  In order to be eligible to enter the awards the products must be free from one or more of the ingredients (including wheat, gluten, dairy, eggs, yeast, nuts and soya) that trouble so many people. It is estimated that globally between 220 and 250 million people suffer from food allergies (World Allergy Organisation) and this figure is continuing to rise.

“AFIA’s Samosa Shop is experiencing a continued increase in demand for its Wheat & Gluten Free food.  Primarily with Wheat & Gluten Free Samosa which closely relate to traditional wheat pastry samosa in that it is deep fried at high temperature or oven baked for healthier alternative; and can be frozen, and re-heated.

“At AFIA’s Samosa Shop we aim to provide products in which taste is never compromised; using only fresh quality ingredients – preferably organic when in season, supplied by our local growers in and around The Midlands.  At the same time, continue to improve our food texture to as closely mimic the mainstream food items – it’s all in the taste.”

Commenting on the results Michelle Berriedale-Johnson, editor of FoodsMatter who chairs the judging sessions said: “There were many dishes that were free from a number of allergens, yet tasted and looked as good as any conventional product and we recognise that to achieve this takes significant skill and investment from the food industry. Our congratulations to the winners and to those whose products were commended; the standard this year was the highest yet and we look forward to seeing what 2014 will bring!”

The range, quality and innovation of the winning and commended products is further evidence of the growth of the freefrom sector in the UK, which is currently valued at £240 million and expected to grow to £519 million by 2016 – a year on year growth of 15.5 %.(Kantar World Panel).

It’s asparagus season!

Fresh British asparagus is available this month so enjoy it while you can.

Rather than chopping off the woody ends, bend each spear so that it breaks naturally.  Use the tender tips for steaming and use the woodier ends in soup.

Buzzards Valley – try some local wines

A true family business – Buzzards Valley wines, bistro, vineyard and fishery was established in Staffordshire in 2001.

The vineyard is a great place to visit – situated between three historic towns – Lichfield, Tamworth and Sutton Coldfield.  They cultivate 8000 vines including Pinot Noir, Rondo, Regent, Madeline Angevine, Richtenstiener, Seyval Blanc and Phoenix.

Taste before you buy at the farmers’ market!

Severn Spots – charcuterie from free-range pork

Severn Spots in Worcester produce great tasting, high quality salami and chorizo from 100% RSPCA accredited free-range pork.  They follow authentic style recipes using quality ingredients – products are all made by hand and then air dried for up to 5 weeks.

They are a family-run business who value animal welfare standards – the pigs are cared for and reared outdoors.  With lower food miles in mind, all their products are packed and labelled on their farm.

Their stall at the market always looks beautiful and they are happy to provide helpful ideas about how to use their products.  Why not take a look?
